TESC HOH Review
Author's Note: For my Spring, 2007, Individual Learning
Contract at The Evergreen State College, I'm reviewing processes for
accommodating students with hearing loss in order to prepare a web page to be
linked to the Evergreen site. As of 5/22/2007 several Evergreen administrators
have agreed to work with me on this project.
My draft web page is located at
http://www.talkshop.info/hoh/TESC-HOH-Guide.htm.

page, please contact me at my public email address:

Suggested Tour / Review of Evergreen's Web Pages
Take a few moments to explore Evergreen's web site. In particular,
please scan the pages provided for Access Services. [Note: To really perform
the litmus test, you might want to check Access Services pages after you tour
and review the materials below.]
New Student Perspective
Put on your imaginary "new student" cap and see what you find.
- Click on the "Prospective Students" tab on the home page
(www.evergreen.edu). See what you discover about services and programs for
students with disabilities. [Hint: I've already tried this at the top level.
The only thing I've found is by clicking on the "Current Students page" link at
the "Resources for Prospective Students" page.]
- Click on the links at the bottom of the home page: "Explore pages
especially for Freshman | Graduate | Transfer" with the same objectives.
- If you're coming straight from high school or are a returning
student, you may not be acquainted with the term "Access Services". I'm not
proposing to change the name of the department; however, it seems like some
language needs to be placed on this page to direct a prospective student. Would
you recommend adding information or links for students with disabilities to any
of these web pages?
Current Student Perspective
Put on your imaginary "current student" cap.
- Find a non-academic event you'd like to attend. How do you request
accommodation for ANY disability, not just hearing loss? If you find something
let me know. If you fail to find anything, where would you recommend placing
such a notice?
- There's an assistive technology computer room on campus. Can you find
it? What equipment is in the room, and when is it open? Hint: It's located in
the Library.
- Your request to receive services from Access Services has been
denied. Is there a grievance process? If so, where is it?
Department Perspective
Regarding your own department's services and web page:
- Do you have information or links for students with disabilities on
your web page?
- Does your staff receive training or literature about students with
disabilities and how to accommodate them?
General Perspective
- Who is the ADA Compliance Officer of Evergreen? How do you contact
this person?
- Does Evergreen provide information and/or training for staff, faculty
and administrators regarding the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or
accommodation tips? If so, how do you find more information?
- Should an ADA notice be on Evergreen's home page or something
similar to the "Disability accommodations" at the bottom of
www.spscc.ctc.edu/CFA/visit.html?
- At the Academic Fair last week, Sara Martin and I discovered the "New
Evergreen Student Checklist" fails to mention anything about disabilities. Do
any of you know who prepares this page?
